Cruise Port Overview
Split is a classic walk-off port: the passenger harbour, Riva and Roman palace all occupy the same central waterfront.
Cruise terminal
Ships dock directly at the central city harbor quays (such as Gat Svetog Duje / Saint Domnius Pier) or along the active ferry port infrastructure right beside downtown. Tendering is rarely required.Exiting the ship puts you immediately next to the ferry terminal, waterfront cafes, the Green Market (Pazar), and the historic center.
Getting to town
Can you walk? Yes, exceptionally easily. Split is one of the most convenient walk-off ports in the Mediterranean. Stepping off the gangway brings you onto a flat, 5 to 10-minute pedestrian walk (roughly 500 meters) northwest along the harbor to the Riva promenade and the Bronze Gate of Diocletian's Palace. Shuttle Bus Details: Because the old town sits right next to the port berths, mandatory internal port shuttle buses are neither required nor operated. Taxis, rideshares (Uber/Bolt), and local transport wait just outside the port exit gates.
History of the Port and City
Split's entire historical identity revolves around Diocletian's Palace, built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian at the turn of the 4th century AD as his retirement residence. Over subsequent centuries, when nearby ancient Salona fell, local populations took refuge inside the massive stone walls, transforming the imperial Roman complex into a living, breathing medieval town. It later flourished under Venetian rule, absorbing rich Renaissance and Gothic architectural layers before becoming Croatia's vibrant second-largest city.
What to visit
Diocletian's Palace & Peristyle: A sprawling 1,700-year-old UNESCO World Heritage complex comprising ancient Roman temples, subterranean cellars, and the central open-air courtyard (Peristyle).The Riva Promenade: The bustling, palm-lined marble seafront promenade running along the southern wall of the palace, packed with open-air cafes and views of the Adriatic. St. Domnius Cathedral: Originally built as Diocletian's mausoleum, featuring a striking medieval bell tower that visitors can climb for panoramic city views. Marjan Hill: A verdant, pine-covered park rising steeply on the western edge of the peninsula, offering peaceful walking trails and sweeping viewpoints over the harbor.

Trogir: A remarkably preserved medieval island town located 30 minutes away by road, featuring winding stone streets and Venetian palaces. Krka National Park:Located about an hour north by road or excursion coach, famous for its magnificent cascading travertine waterfalls and lush river boardwalks.

What can you realistically do yourself?
Split is exceptionally easy independently. The Palace and Old Town are directly ahead of the ship. Marjan is a walking extension; Klis and Salona are the only options here that meaningfully depend on road transport.
