Santorini’s beauty comes with unusual port logistics: your ship anchors in the caldera, you tender ashore, then you still have to climb from the Old Port to Fira before the island day really begins. Santorini is one of the Mediterranean's most iconic and heavily visited cruise destinations, celebrated worldwide for its dramatic caldera views, whitewashed architecture, and stunning sunsets.
Your cruise arrival
Cruise ships cannot dock at a pier and must hold position offshore. Passengers are brought ashore using tender boats to one of two locations: the Old Port (Skala) beneath Fira (for independent travelers) or the New Port (Athinios) further south (primarily used for organized cruise-line coach excursions).
Getting up to Fira
Arriving at the Old Port places you at sea level right beneath the cliffside capital of Fira. To reach the top, you can ride the Fira Cable Car(a quick 3 to 5-minute ride), walk up the 587 winding steps (shared with donkey riders), or take a traditional donkey ride. History
Santorini (historically known as Thera) was shaped by one of the largest volcanic cataclysms in human history around 1600 BC—the Minoan eruption—which collapsed the center of the island and created the immense underwater caldera. This disaster famously buried the flourishing Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri in volcanic ash, linking the island forever to the legend of Atlantis. Subsequent Venetian and Ottoman rulers left behind Catholic quarters, fortifications, and distinct Cycladic hillside settlements.
What to visit
Fira and Oia are the classic first-time choices. Fira (Thira): The vibrant cliffside capital packed with white-washed cubic houses, blue-domed churches, and stunning panoramic lookouts over the sunken volcano. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera adds excellent archaeology without leaving Fira.The Caldera Walking Path: A breathtaking, mostly pedestrian cliffside trail stretching from Fira through Firostefani to Imerovigli, offering uninterrupted vistas of the sea below.
Further afield
Fira is Santorini’s capital and transport hub, perched on the caldera rim. Once you reach the top, you can explore locally or walk to the KTEL bus station for Oia, Akrotiri and other villages. The Archaeological Site of Akrotiri: A remarkably preserved prehistoric Minoan city frozen in volcanic ash, often referred to as the "Pompeii of the Aegean". is the strongest archaeology excursion. Ancient Thera would normally be another option, but it has been officially closed since 27 June 2026 until further notice. Red Beach & Volcanic Vineyards: Dramatic southern coastal landscapes featuring unique red-sand cliffs and inland wineries cultivating indigenous Assyrtiko grapes in volcanic soil.

The official 2026 general fare is €10 one way. The cable-car ride itself takes about three minutes.
Official cable car ↗The historic stepped route connects the Old Port and Fira. It is strenuous, exposed and shared with animals; temporary closures can happen, so do not rely on it as your only return option.
Some organised ship excursions use Athinios ferry port for coach access. Follow the exact instructions issued by your cruise line.
Greek cruise levy
Santorini’s cruise levy is €20 from June–September, €12 in April/May/October and €4 from November–March per disembarking cruise passenger under the Greek government system. It is normally handled through the cruise operator / agent rather than paid at the pier.

What can you realistically do yourself?
Fira is easy once you reach the top. Oia and Akrotiri are realistic on medium or long calls, but the return to the ship always includes Fira → cable car / stairs → Old Port → tender. That extra logistics layer is why Santorini needs a larger buffer than an ordinary docked port.
