La Spezia
Cruise ships use the active commercial port around Molo Garibaldi. Port tariff material specifies a shuttle-bus service connecting Garibaldi Pier directly with the Cruise Terminal at Largo Michele Fiorillo. From the terminal, central La Spezia and onward rail / bus connections become straightforward.

Cruise Port Overview
Your Cruise Port
Ships dock at the main Garibaldi Pier (Molo Garibaldi) within the Port of La Spezia, which features dedicated passenger handling facilities and welcome services.
Getting into Town
Can you walk? No, walking directly out of the industrial container terminal zone is not permitted on foot for security reasons. Shuttle Bus Pick-Up & Drop-Off Details: The port authority and local transit providers operate compulsory port shuttle buses that pick passengers up right beside the cruise ship gangway and transport them on a quick 5 to 10-minute ride to the main port exit gates near Piazza Europa or the edge of the downtown area. Once dropped off near the town perimeter, you have immediate access to pedestrian shopping streets (Via del Prione), waterfront public gardens (Giardini Pubblici), cafes, and local gelaterias. Official taxis and hop-on tour buses await passengers right where the shuttle drops off.
History of La Spezia
Although inhabited since antiquity, La Spezia remained a small fishing village for centuries until the mid-19th century, when the visionary statesman Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, selected its naturally deep and sheltered gulf to construct the massive Royal Naval Arsenal (Arsenale Militare Marittimo). This transformed La Spezia into one of Italy's most strategic military and industrial naval powerhouses, shaping its urban landscape through modern expansions and defense history.
What to Visit
Technical Naval Museum (Museo Tecnico Navale): Located right near the historic naval base gates, housing an incredible collection of figureheads, ship models, historical diving suits, and naval artillery. Castello San Giorgio: A medieval hilltop fortress overlooking the city that houses archaeological artifacts dating back to the Bronze Age. Via del Prione: La Spezia's vibrant, pedestrianized historic shopping artery lined with local boutiques, cafes, and historic architecture. Giardini Pubblici: Expansive, elegant waterfront public gardens featuring exotic plants, marble monuments, and panoramic views across the Gulf of Poets.
Further afield
The Cinque Terre: A breathtaking collection of five colorful, cliff-hugging fishing villages (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso) connected by scenic railway tunnels and coastal hiking trails, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Portovenere: A picturesque medieval coastal town situated at the tip of the peninsula, famous for Lord Byron's Grotto, St. Peter’s Church perched on the rocks, and Doria Castle. Lerici: A charming nearby resort town set across the gulf, featuring a dramatic medieval castle and lovely sandy beaches.
Take the designated shuttle from the ship / Garibaldi Pier to the Cruise Terminal.
Continue to the station and use regional trains / Train Card.
Official local tourism: about 30 min from the station, €3.
Treat Pisa as a dedicated rail excursion and pre-book the Leaning Tower if climbing.
After the port shuttle you still need to reach La Spezia Centrale for Cinque Terre trains. Build that city transfer into both your outbound and return timing.

Independent exploration
What can you realistically do yourself?
La Spezia is excellent independently if you respect the port-shuttle layer. Cinque Terre is simple by train, Portovenere by bus / boat, and the city itself is walkable. Pisa is realistic on a long call; Florence is much more aggressive.
Suggested Port Day
How long do you have ashore?
The hard rule is to be back at the Cruise Terminal early enough for the port shuttle to the ship.
Reaching La Spezia city is not the same as reaching the ship: protect the final terminal-to-pier shuttle.
Build a La Spezia port-day plan with the return protected.
Return-to-ship safety
Can I make it back comfortably?
Select where you expect to be later in the day.
Leave time after reaching the Cruise Terminal.
Do not rely on the last possible Cinque Terre train.
Two or three well-paced stops beat racing all five.
Normal return: destination → La Spezia → Cruise Terminal → port shuttle → ship.
Back to the ship

Directions target the Cruise Terminal; the secure-port shuttle completes the final leg to the ship.
Important: The port shuttle is the final operational step between the city-facing terminal and the ship.
Organised tours
Rather have a tour?
Tours are unnecessary for La Spezia itself. They add value for tightly timed Cinque Terre, Pisa / Florence or boat-based Gulf of Poets itineraries.
