Getting to Katakolon Town
Can you walk it? Yes. After you get off your tender boat (if your ship requires it) or if your ship docks directly at the pier, Katakolon, the small seaside town, and port gate start immediately where you disembark, allowing you to walk straight into the center within a few minutes. Immediately outside the port, the main street and waterfront has cafés, bars and shops Shuttle Bus: Because the town and waterfront tavernas begin right outside the port gates, no shuttle bus or taxi is required to reach the local centre.
History of Katakolon
Historically a small fishing and trading village, Katakolon grew in the 19th century as a vital export harbor shipping black currants and agricultural goods from the Peloponnese to Western Europe. Beyond its modern port history, the region holds deep antiquity roots linked to the nearby ancient town of Pheia and the establishment of the original Olympic Games in 776 BC.
What to Visit in Katakolon
The Katakolon Waterfront: A scenic harbor promenade packed with traditional Greek tavernas, cafes, and local shops. Kostas Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology: Located right near the port, featuring working reconstructions of ancient Greek mechanisms, robots, and inventions. The Lighthouse of Katakolon:A historic 18th/19th-century working lighthouse sitting atop a verdant hill overlooking the Ionian coastline.

The Archaeological Site of Ancient Olympia: Located about 45 minutes inland, featuring the original Olympic stadium, the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera, and the altar where the modern Olympic flame is lit. The Archaeological Museum of Olympia: Houses priceless antiquities unearthed from the site, including the famous statue of Hermes by Praxiteles and the Nike of Paionios. Mercouri Estate: A historic local wine estate and vineyard founded in 1864, located a short distance away in the countryside.
