Your Cruise Terminal
Ships dock at the modern commercial port area of Heraklion. Because it is an active container and commercial zone, passengers are generally restricted from walking directly through the outer port lanes.
Getting into Local Town
Can you walk? Not directly from the shipside gangway, but once you clear the immediate port zone, walking is fully accessible. Shuttle Bus: Port authorities or the city provide mandatory free shuttle buses that pick passengers up directly beside the ship/pier and take them on a quick 5-minute trip to the main passenger terminal building. From the terminal exit, a painted yellow line on the pavement guides independent pedestrians along a flat, 15 to 20-minute scenic walk (roughly 1 mile) past the marina directly to the edge of the old town and the Venetian Harbor. Taxis are also readily available right outside the terminal.
History of the Port and City
Crete's history stretches back to the Stone Age, but Heraklion is most famous as the heartland of the Minoan Civilization (Bronze Age Europe's first advanced civilization), which flourished over 4,000 years ago before being heavily impacted by the cataclysmic Thera volcanic eruption. Over subsequent centuries, the city fell under Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Venetian (who built its massive defensive walls and fortress), and Ottoman rule before joining modern Greece.
What to visit
Koules Fortress: The imposing 16th-century Venetian sea fort guarding the entrance of the old harbor. Heraklion Archaeological Museum: A world-class museum in the city center housing the globe's finest collection of Minoan artifacts, including the Phaistos Disc and ancient frescoes. Lions Square (Plagía Eleftheriou) & Morosini Fountain: The vibrant social hub of the old town featuring an ornate 17th-century marble lion fountain. Odos 1866 Open-Air Market: A bustling traditional daily market street packed with local Cretan herbs, honey, cheese, and olive oil.

The Palace of Knossos: Located just 5 kilometers south of the port, this sprawling Bronze Age archaeological site is legendary as the seat of King Minos and home of the labyrinth myth.Public Transport (Bus to Knossos): From the city center or designated local bus stops near the port, you can catch City Bus No. 2, which runs frequently (every 15–20 minutes) and takes about 20 minutes to reach the Palace of Knossos for a very low fare. Set Tours & Excursions: Shore excursion buses, hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses, and private tour operators park directly outside the terminal building to pick up passengers for guided excursions to Knossos or Cretan olive oil and wine estates. Archanes Village & Peza Wine Region: A picturesque traditional inland town surrounded by ancient olive groves and family-run vineyards offering authentic Cretan wine tastings.

Heraklion is excellent independently. The local city route is almost entirely walking-based, and Knossos is directly linked by urban bus from the port / city. The main decision is how much time to give Knossos versus the Archaeological Museum.
