Getting to Genoa Town
Can you walk? Walking directly out of the immediate terminal area leads you toward the waterfront and old harbor, though walking through the wider industrial port zones is discouraged. Shuttle Bus: Port or municipal shuttle buses (such as the Volabus or local transit lines) operate frequently near the terminal exits, and complimentary terminal shuttles assist with moving between shipside berths and the main port gates. Official taxis are stationed right outside the terminal buildings.
History of Genoa
Known historically as La Superba ("The Superb"), Genoa rose during the Middle Ages to become one of the most powerful maritime republics in the Mediterranean. Fueled by naval dominance, banking, and international trade, its seafaring merchants amassed vast wealth, creating a legacy marked by explorers like Christopher Columbus and a dense network of magnificent Renaissance and Baroque palaces.
What to Visit
The Old Port (Porto Antico): Revitalized by architect Renzo Piano, this bustling waterfront features the massive Genoa Aquarium (one of Europe's largest), the Biosphere, and the Bigo panoramic lift. Via Garibaldi (Le Strade Nuove): A stunning UNESCO World Heritage street flanked by magnificent 16th-century aristocratic palaces (Palazzi dei Rolli). Genoa Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Lorenzo): A striking medieval cathedral featuring distinctive black-and-white striped marble bands and a treasury museum housing historic artifacts. Castello d'Albertis & Montegalletto Lift: A unique castle museum perched on a hill, accessed via an ingenious combination horizontal-vertical funicular elevator system starting from Via Balbi. Aquarium of Genoa: One of Europe’s major aquariums, located directly on Porto Antico and within easy walking distance of the cruise terminal.

Portofino & The Italian Riviera: Picturesque pastel-colored cliffside fishing villages set along the Gulf of Tigullio, accessible via regional trains or seasonal coastal ferries.
